SUMMARY:Adirondack Correctional Facility: A Public Health Crisis in the North Country
DESCRIPTION:Join High Peaks DSA\, the Release Aging People in Prison Campaign\, and others to learn about the situation at ADK Correctional Facility in Ray Brook\, where the state has moved nearly 100 incarcerated people aged 55 and older into a prison nursing home\, many of whom face an increased risk of COVID-19 from conditions such as HIV and COPD. \nFor weeks public health experts\, community organizers and residents\, and advocates across the state have warned Governor Cuomo that this prison nursing home plan was a recipe for disaster. Our worst nightmare is beginning to come true since there are at least two COVID-19 cases at the facility. Now that the virus is in the prison\, it will spread like wildfire\, needlessly harming and killing elder New Yorkers in prison. \nRacism is a public health crisis\, and the dangers faced by incarcerated elders in Ray Brook can be alleviated by lifesaving clemencies and the passage of the Elder Parole bill and Fair and Timely Parole Act. DESCRIPTION:The High Peaks DSA for Fred Balzac and Trevor Sussey campaign will be canvassing Saturday\, September 5! We’ll have 2 shifts of safe\, contact-less literature drops at voter doors. \nMeet: This Saturday at 9:30 AM or 1 PM\, (or both) for training and walking maps at Berkeley Green in Downtown Saranac Lake. \nIf you can\, please send an email to highpeaksdsa@gmail to let us know which shifts you are available for so we have a rough head count & can plan accordingly. \nBring: \n\n\n\nA friend: The more the merrier\, and we’d love a strong showing of support for Fred!\nA mask: And plan on wearing it while canvassing\, we will be doing contactless door drops\, but we would like everyone to be prepared to come into contact with others and represent this campaign as safe and responsible during ongoing Covid-19 pandemic.\nHand sanitizer and/ or gloves to make sure hands are clean while handling literature.\nWater & a snack.\nAnything you need to comfortably walk and be outside for 3–6 hours (hat\, sunscreen\, etc…).\n\n\n\nWe look forward to seeing you all there!
